Realizing the task of architects goes beyond the professional realms and expands to a social participation, we declared our determination toward Soul of City in terms of three major titles such that: NATURE takes revenge on the soullessness of urbanization with fine dust, climate change, and diseases of domestic animals being born as our food. Thus, architects perceive the effort of nature to re-naturalize itself, and make every effort on natural rehabilitation of cities. In doing so, nature enlightens sustainable technologies. Therefore, we, as architects, reflect the cultural, historical and social demands on our works, to be complementary and compatible to nature.
The soul of CULTURE creates unique and collective culture in a place and develops a collective sense of sympathy to urban settings. Therefore, architects arouse the cultural memes among old and new through emphasizing each era¡¯s modernity, as well as shape cities with latent spiritual values, awakening the soul of culture. Architects stimulate a civic sense on historical and cultural accumulation, with architecture than reveal hidden and latent meaning of a place and culture. The soul of FUTURE in the city is based on human and environment rather than cold-capital. We, architects fill the city with public spaces that people can Share with warm-hearted open minds. Embracing the soul of future within the architecture and infrastructure of a city, architects evoke the sense of caring of urban environments through architectural invention in infrastructures.
Always optimistic and constructive is the spirit of architecture. Trends of urban architecture of the 21st century are inclining toward concerns of human and soul of cities. What we liked to state through the theme Soul of City was that many urban disciplines failed to handle the complex milieu of city life. Therefore, cities are dying, i.e., citizens are being humiliated. We need effective, multi-variate, and holistic medicine to cure sick cities. The profession of architecture is traditionally to handle such compounded and difficult-to-be-solved tasks. Architects have made splendor of city life in human history. Remember and be proud of it! Architects should realize and know what we can and must do for the revival of Soul of City. It is evidently Soul of Architecture we have to revive first.
"¡¦ and to the Café Central at 14 Herrengasse in Vienna, to be
precise. Names can be so revealing."

Sung-Ah Kim
And so the captial of the modern age anno 1913 is Vienna, Its star players are Sigmund Freud, Arthur Schnitzler, Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, Adolf Loos, Karl Kraus, Otto Wagner, Hugh von Hoffmannsthal, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Georg Trakl, Arnold Schönberg and Oskar Kokoschka, to name a few. Here the battles raged: about the unconscious, about dreams, the new music, the new architecture, the new logic, the new morality.
Excerpt from, Florian Illies, 1913: The Year before the Storm What is the soul of a city? What make a city livable and attractive? How the great cities of history attracted geniuses who changed the world? The UIA Seoul 2017 was a mixture of such endeavors to find the universal key to this these questions. For a city to be smart, it should be able to attract smart people as the cites like Vienna, Paris or New York did in 20th century. That is out common belief, and there should be various elements and methods to make it possible. The title, the Soul of City summarizes the philosophy behind the UIA 2017. Too many good ideas and papers have been contributed under this theme. Assorted here are a handful of representative papers which seem to reveal the title: The Soul of City.
